Selecting Colors

You'll be participating."Color consulting with my clients is always a very collaborative process," says color consultant Erica Mize Clients may need just a little design direction or may be starting off with a completely blank slate and only have architectural plans to work from. I assess where they are in the process and let them use me as little or as much as they need me.

Be ready to look at choices during the first visit. The first visit will involve a walk-through of your home. "When We do the first walk-through with the clients, We are envisioning how the color scheme will create a flow through the home," "It's really hard for people to envision the whole house just looking at small paint chips." Thus, we come armed with choicesin neutral colors we knows work consistently.

"It's a good shortcut; We can show the clients these neutrals with their existing fixed finishes — i.e., countertops, flooring — show them how they do or do not work, and see their response," "Once we have the neutrals down we can add pops of color where you want to make bigger color statements."

A palette is like one big, happy family -- each color is strong on its own, but they're even more amazing together.

Finally, a pink that isn't too saccharine. "It's feminine, of course, but so sophisticated and amazing as a neutral when paired with blues, blacks, and metallics. Gentle Blush 2084-70 Benjamin Moore

The popular new kid on the color block isn't going away any time soon. This cool, muted gray can look both classic and contemporary. Foil DE6360 Dunn-Edwards

Other colors in the palette almost bounce off this midtone blue, giving it a big, gregarious personality. Smoke Blue PPG451-5 Pittsburgh Paints

A hint of silver makes this green stand out. "It's a throwback to the greens used in 1950s kitchens, Smoke Bell RL1599 Ralph Lauren Paint

Everyone's crushing on this energetic orange. "It's like a kiss," "It can be a comma, a question mark, or an exclamation point." Tango 6649 Sherwin-Williams
